Functional Purpose
Performs distribution and a variety of sales and customer support services for products. Maintains pleasant and effective

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs any variety of sales and customer services at a retail window such as maintaining sufficient inventory of and

3. Provides product and service information to customers, including informing customers regarding special offers; suggestive
selling related merchandise; promoting products based on customer needs. Provides additional information regarding

4. Handles and processes customer purchases and returns relating to products and services and may use a point of sale
system. Assists customers with transactions.
5. Maintains appearance of store by setting up, arranging, and replenishing displays and merchandise racks; ensures
display and selling areas, work stations, and storage areas are presentable to customers.
6. Conducts product inventories by counting items on hand; attaches and removes security devices; accounts for items on

Purpose
Your second assignment will build upon the first in which you started learning about workplace culture and expectations. For the second assignment, you will do some research and investigate a specific job in a specific profession. You will write an informal report in memo form about the job you wish to obtain and the workplace/field you wish to join so that you are prepared when you graduate or after you finish a graduate/professional degree. This is an opportunity to explore your future career, its professional expectations, and if this job is a good fit for you.

Since this is a class about professional writing, you must research what kinds of writing are done in your chosen profession. The section on written and oral communication should be a significant component of the assignment and one of the key goals of your interview. You will need to learn the following:

How much writing is done by someone in this position?
What are some examples of typical genres, or types, of writing?
How is that writing produced? Individually or in teams?
Who is the intended audience?
What are the consequences or effects of writing poorly or well?
Are there any specific writing or communication conventions typical to this organization?
What is unique or notable about the writing style in this professional community?
How much oral presentation is done?

In addition to discovering what kinds of writing you might be doing in the future, you should also research other aspects of the organizational culture. For example, you might explore whether the field has experienced any recent changes (e.g. influenced by new technology, outsourcing, downsizing, etc.) and how that might affect your future. You may also wish to research generational and communication differences or write about basic office life and protocol:

job stability and growth potential
structure of chain of command
diversity
skills set/personality type required
While you must write about writing conventions and expectations, the other information you choose to include will be up to you. The goal is to help you transition to the workforce and recognize how you must adapt to a new culture. What would be most helpful for someone entering this career to know? Only you can answer that as that information will differ a lot from one field to another. However, you will need to explain and justify what you researched and why in the memo. It can be helpful to ask your interviewee what a typical day is like to get a feel for what he/she does. You will also need to define the job and its duties. This is especially important if a reader might not know what the job is or entails.

Audience
While you will address the memo to me, you should assume that your audience is well educated but lacks specific knowledge about the field, as if you were writing to first-year UCD students who might be interested in pursuing the same profession. Be careful to avoid jargon and define any terminology outsiders would not understand.

Method
Talking to someone in the field is the best way to find out what a job is really like. Therefore, you will need to do an informational interview with someone in your field, ideally someone who has or has had the position you want to obtain. Try to find someone who has been in that field for at least 5-10 years. An employee in an entry-level position will be less experienced, perform different tasks, and have a more limited perspective. For additional information on how to do an informational interview, refer to the ICC’s Career Resource Manual and the interview tips in Chapter 7 of Technical Communication. You will need to type and submit your interview questions with your final draft. Do not ask your interviewee for job.

To supplement and complement your informational interview, you will also do some additional research on the field to gain a variety of perspectives. Remember that one source is a small sample size, and your interview subject could have a different view than others in the field. Therefore, you will need to cite at least six additional written sources about the field, which may include professional websites (and virtually every profession has one or more professional organizations), trade articles, government sources, and popular and/or scholarly articles. If you use popular articles, make sure the source is reputable and substantial. You should look for sources that are in-depth and provide not just facts but also an overview of what it might be like to work in that field. Therefore, you don’t want to use too many websites, and the only websites you should refer to are professional organizations or the Bureau of Labor Statistics—that is, they should be field specific and authoritative.

Your goal is to establish that your research has been thorough and comprehensive and that you are credible in writing about this profession. You may wish to research unemployment rates in your field, typical trajectories of advancement, percentage of women in upper management, trends in the field, etc. However, you must be informed about the field’s current major trends to establish your ethos, or credibility, as a writer. You should also research how people in that field feel about or regard their careers.

It’s also important not just to dump lots of statistics and quotations from your research onto readers. Readers will ignore data if it becomes overwhelming or if it’s not explained and put into context. Your audience may not need five statistics on the same issue. You will likely find much more information than you can include. Pick and choose what’s most relevant. This report should also have an analytical, reflective component. Be sure to analyze and interpret what you think this information means and why it’s significant, so that the report isn’t simply a listing of facts with no meaning, interpretation, or opinion. What’s the context for understanding the information you provide?

You will also need to look up and use the citation style used in the field. If it’s not commonly used in the workplace, use the citation style that would be used in the related academic major. Be sure to use the correct method in the text or footnotes/end notes (whichever is required) and references page. You must include an example or sample page of the citation style with your final draft with the citation method listed on the page. Be sure to follow the formatting guidelines on the sample page you provide.

Format and Organization
Use a memo format, 1,800-2,000 words (max), single spaced, block paragraphs. You will need to organize for readability, which means using headings/subheadings, bullet points, etc. Think about how to organize your information to make it easy for your reader to understand quickly and to re-read sections, as many readers do. If you incorporate visuals that are not your own, be sure to cite them. (And a visual alone would not be substantive enough to count as one of your five sources.)

Memos are typically specific immediately and get to the point right away. Your introduction should briefly state your purpose, introduce your interviewee (credentials, including years of experience), and what you wanted to find out. You should also reflect on what you learned through this research in your conclusion. Your conclusion should not repeat what you already wrote but state what you learned overall about the profession from doing this research and what you made of that. Do some reflecting. Tell us if you discovered something that surprised you, or if you found what you expected to find. Readers will also want to know if doing this report changed your opinion about joining this field and why.

You need to include a draft references page with the rough draft of the report so we can assess the quality of your research as part of peer review.

As part of the final draft, you need to include your references page, the sample/example of references page (e.g. a sample of how to do an article and website in your citation method, MLA, APA, etc.), and the list of questions for your interviewee with the interviewee’s contact information (email and phone number) along with the first draft and peer reviews.

Assessment Criteria
This assignment is worth 200 points.

An “A” report conveys clear ideas about the job and field and develops them with relevant examples and evidence. The writer has researched the field and uses a variety of quality sources. The writer demonstrates depth as well as breadth in his/her research and thereby establishes credibility. The writer sounds knowledgeable about the profession. The report provides and analyzes relevant information. The report is organized for readability and uses a logical structure to convey the information with specific, appropriate headings, subheadings, etc. The writer uses the citation method appropriate to the field (APA, MLA, CBE, AMA) and correctly formats the references. The sentence structure is active and concise, and the writer avoids jargon. The report has few, if any, grammatical errors and looks polished and professional.

A “D” report may use fewer than six sources beyond the interview, or the sources may all reflect the same category (i.e. all websites) and lack depth and breadth. A “D” paper may lack an interview or a section on writing. The exploration of the field may lack relevant examples or substance. The grammatical errors may be extensive and interfere with comprehension. The writer may fail to turn in a references page with the report.

Workplace Research Sources
Here is a starting point for some preliminary research into your field. Most fields have professional organizations that provide information and standards for the field. Those websites can be excellent places to start and may direct you to other sources. Various periodicals, newspapers, and newsletters will also often profile people in a particular field, giving you more of a human interest perspective. Reading a daily newspaper and trade sources will help you’re you current on trends in your field. Your report should include more than just numbers. One of your goals will be to discover what people in the field think about the field.

For this task, you will create an annotated bibliography by finding 8-10 sources for your research paper, listing the sources in APA-formatted references, and providing an annotation for each source. the meaning of American history to folks living in later times

n lieu of a final, summative essay for this course, you will prepare a creative project that showcases your ability to think critically about the meaning of American history to folks living in later times, while also, I hope, demonstrating some creative inspiration drawn from one of the three novels you have read. For the creative final, you will practice your own hand at imagine an alternate history like the ones we have read, though you won’t be writing a story, you will simply be outlining major changes that your alternate version of history follows. For this project, choose a moment in American history that you think has significance, and change it. Obviously, the change has to make some potential sense: Philip K. Dick writes about Germany and Japan winning WWII, not about the Chinese and Dutch defeating everyone and establishing a Sino-Dutch World Empire. That would make practically no sense given what happened in the first half of the twentieth century. But I want to stress that the moment is your choice. It can be as major or minor as you like, but you will need to show both the moment’s importance (a relative concept) and its impact on history when altered. You will notice that the alternate histories we’ve read this summer have followed closely to history even after the nexus point (there is a space race in the 1950s-1960s in Bisson; much of what happens in the Eleanor vs. Ike campaigns happened in the real 1952 election; etc.), so you might think about how significant moments in American history that happened after your nexus point were altered or remained the same.

Overall, your project should be at least 1,000 words long, consisting of four separate and clearly delineated written sections and a title.

You will need the following for this project:

An evocative title that makes clear your nexus point

A 200-word narrative description of your nexus point, what really happened in history, and the importance of this moment to American history overall (if you choose a minor moment, that’s great, just explain why this minor moment truly matters). This moment doesn’t have to be a specific moment, per se, but can be a general period in American history (e.g. the building of the railroads by largely Chinese laborers in the mid-to-late 1800s)

A 300-word narrative description of your alternate-history-making event, of the thing that makes your nexus point different in your alternate history (e.g. Chinese laborers revolt against the railroad companies for unfair labor practices, escape to the desert, join forces with the Comanche, and together they establish a new nation in the eastern southwest of the U.S.). Why do these things happen? How massive is the change? Does make waves throughout the world? How does it affect immediate American history? What’s the significance of this new event?

A 300-word narrative description of the history of the U.S. (if it still exists) over the next 50-100, years hitting major highlights of American history and the changes that your nexus point have wrought. Please emphasize the way in which the event impacts cultural, gender, racial, class, economic, geopolitical, and other significant aspects of American history. How do things turn out differently across the board? Be creative in thinking about, for example, how the sinking of General Winfield Scott’s armies off the coast of Veracruz in 1847 caused the U.S. to lose the Mexican-American War (1845-1848), thereby ensuring that Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and California remained a permanent part of Mexico—how would such a thing affect the U.S.’s development throughout the 19th and 20th centuries? Would there have been a Civil War? Would slavery still be legal? Would Mexico be the world’s great superpower by WWII? Would Mexico have developed Hollywood?

A 200-word explanation of the logic behind your alternate history and the world that it creates. Why did you choose this event? Why make that change? Why do you think it affect history in the way you outline?

You do not need to cite any sources, since you’re (1) just relaying general facts about history and (2) creating your own facts

You will be graded on both your thoroughness in address your alternate history’s changes; your logic in working out how history might have changed, thus demonstrating that you fully understand the history and issues at hand; and your creativity in imagining new ways of thinking about history.
